Fogra has released its 'Energy efficiency of large and small format printing systems' report, a market comparison of the energy efficiency or various printing systems. 

EFI's VUTEk wide-format printers with LED UV-curing came out on top of the machines surveyed, with the research showing that the series can give an energy reduction of up to 82 percent compared with conventional mercury arc lamp devices.

The project was funded by the Bavarian ministry of economic affairs, infrastructure, transport and technology and covered a period from Febuary 1st 2013 to January 31st 2014. The stated aim of the research was to rectify the fact that no guidelines and reccommendations currently exist for the evaluation of digital print machine energy efficiency.

"We thoroughly tested and assessed the lower energy usage when we originally developed these printers," says Scott Schinlever, senior vice-president and general manager of EFI ink-jet solutions. "The results from Fogra now provide third-party and impartial confirmation of the significantly reduced power requirements.

"While others claim green benefits, their use of heat to cure and having thicker substrates runs counter to being green."
