An LED video wall from Atlanta-based NanoLumens, makers of custom-built indoor and outdoor LED displays for a variety of markets, plays a major role in one of the more unique tourist attractions on the planet: The Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky.

The Ark Encounter is a full-size Noah’s Ark, built according to the dimensions given in the Bible. The “ship” is 510’ long, 85’ wide and 51’ high with three decks, and is meant to bring the Biblical story of Noah to life.

Where NanoLumens comes in is in the attraction’s new “Answers Center,” which was built in 2019. Along with a new gift shop, the Answers Center also hosts daily presentations in the 2,500-seat auditorium, and that’s where a 70’ x 22’ NanoLumens 4mm pixel pitch LED display dominates the presentation stage.

According to Mike Jonas, Project Manager for Denver-based Clearwing Systems Integration, the firm responsible for the installation, the NanoLumens display was an ideal choice to provide an eye-grabbing video display that can be used in a variety of ways.

“The Answers Center has a very large stage at 80’ wide,” Jonas said. “A video wall gives them the ability to use the wall as a backdrop without needing actual drops or flyspace. In this case, a video wall really was the only solution as the desired result could not be practically accomplished with projectors. In addition, the video wall also serves as masking for the upstage crossover.”

Clearwing has worked with the Ark Encounter since its construction and opening in 2016, so they knew exactly what kind of ‘WOW factor’ the owners were looking for in the new building, Jonas says.

“We had seen other NanoLumens displays and were impressed with the image quality, along with the warranty,” Jonas adds.

The NanoLumens video wall is used to provide a digital canvas for presenters, show educational videos about biblical topics and promote new exhibits and upcoming events.
